ভারতের বড়লাট লর্ড কার্জনের এক ঘোষণার মাধ্যমে ১৯০৫ সালের ১৬ অক্টোবর 'বঙ্গভঙ্গ' হয়। বঙ্গভঙ্গের ফলে নতুন প্রদেশ ' পূর্ববঙ্গ ও আসাম ' গঠিত হয়।
নবগঠিত এ প্রদেশের রাজধানী ও আইনসভা ছিল ঢাকায়। 'বঙ্গভঙ্গ' রদ হয় ১৯১১ সালে লর্ড হার্ডিঞ্জের সময়ে।
